Srinagar, Dec 23 (KNO): Divisional Fire Officer Tasaduk Ahmad Hakeem on Friday called for the judicious use of electric heating appliances to prevent fire incidents in winter. Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Tasaduk said the increasing fire incidents in winter are the result of massive load on electric wires due to the non-judicious use of heavy heating appliances which ultimately leads to short circuits. “The electric wires are unable to resist such load, leading to short circuits. Most of these incidents take place during the night,” he said, adding that people should close the heating appliances after warming the room. The fire incidents, the officer said, mostly take place in structures having highly combustible material like wood, etc. He urged people to be careful while using LPG for heating purposes, saying any carelessness can lead to the loss of human lives. “If you are using LPG for heating purposes then ventilation is a must so that there is an equal amount of oxygen in the room because LPG fully consumes oxygen,” he said. Tasaduk appealed to the people to desist from using electric blankets and hot water bottles simultaneously to avoid short circuits while citing an incident that took place in Kupwara where a lady was burnt alive. Meanwhile, the officer hailed the fire services personnel for discharging their duties in a professional manner saying “we try our best”. People should cooperate and not create hurdles during fire incidents, he said, adding, “Our men are trained to handle such situations professionally.” The Divisional Fire Officer also asked the hotels, departments, and business establishments that have installed first aid equipment to approach the Fire and Emergency Services department for training. “We are going to hold a mock drill and training on fire and emergency services tomorrow at the SMHS hospital,” he said—(KNO)
